I suspect in a couple months we may see entry level builds with 5060 and 9060s with 16GB.
However, as other noted....this will be fine with modern games with the right settings. No you wan't do ultra or will need to turn off a few things....but you can still game.
My College Freshman gamer is very happy with their 3070 with 8GB for all the games. (They fully grasp the value of a dollar....) (Yeah I get the 3070 8gb is much better than the 4060 8gb...but it's still 8gb...)
3060 12gb
Cons
-Only 8GB GDDR6 14 Gbps
---
Again..I'm not disputing that 16GB is useful and better than 8gb.
Just so long as you manage your settings, you can run just about anything on 8GB.
Something you may want to do anyway on lower level card.
First a 9060XT 16G at 350 is miles better. Second, what pulls you back in a SI system like this in very near future is almost always not your graphic card, but most likely other components (non upgradeable mb, trash memory, PSU, bad thermo), which likely won't help you live through the already short lifecycle of RTX 4060 before you realize the build is not enough. And at that time, even if you are willing to upgrade GPU, the rest of the system just won't keep up and there's no other way other than trash it entirely. In this deals case, sacrificing longevity for maybe $200 cheaper over a similarly spec build is more costly in the long run by any measurement

If you adjust setting you can also run just about everything on a potato lol. Take a look at the exponential frame rate loss when running same GPU with 8GB and 16G. You'd think 5060 8G cost 20% less than 16G and should perform 20% less? Think again after watching benchmark. 8G has no place in any of today's new games (Even Esport titles given the horrendous stutters and 1% lows) and is only there to trick people into buying things worse than what they thought(like in this ad where it doesn't show if it's a 8G or 16G and people think that it's a good deal). And the only reason that we allow AMD and NVidia do this is the mentality of "it can still run"
How much research have you done into this "AI stuff"?
Look into the LLM you're trying to run and it will answer your question.
Typically, more vRAM is not only recommended, but required.
They will be running on looser settings that are difficult to notice.
They are selling these games to folks who have quite a range of older CPUs.
If they only ran on Just Released CPUs, they would not make any money.
Doubt you game on any PC.....But you've read some articles and fan sites....

Take a look at 5060 performance on pcie 3.0/4.0 MBs with old CPUs... 15%-20% drop just because of the xi bandwidth and sometimes worse than 3060ti...Been building and playing on pc for 15 years and this is literally the worse time, worse than covid because people then traded used GPU and banked on hopes that when it was over we would have reasonably priced GPUs better than the wonderful 30 series... Now it's just despair watching AMD and Nvidia feast on AI hype and shovel shits to gamers mouth, knowing we have to buy it anyway......
The only reason vRAM requirements seem as high as they are (and are frequently overstated) is because game developers have stopped bothering to optimize their games. AMD further perpetuated this by caving into the developers and releasing hardware with more vRAM than was required two generations early.
Even so, there are no games out today where 16GB is a requirement.
There are also no games out today that will prohibit you from playing if your card has 8GB of vRAM. Heck, most won't even complain if you have 4GB or 6GB.
Will you have a better graphical experience as the card scales higher? Obviously. But there's also occasional diminishing returns as you get near the top that no YouTuber is brave enough to admit either. Don't forget, telling people their brand new hardware is already utter garbage is how they make money.
Gaming was a lot more fun when people just played them instead of treating them like expensive tech demos and shaming others for not having the best hardware.
I'm sure that 1 million FPS @ 8K ultra looks amazing. Too bad you have all those benchmark and stat overlays covering it most of the time.

Oh, and don't forget the latest trend of internally rendering the game at the same resolution you had on an old Nokia and then letting AI upscale it, all so you can get 300FPS with the same graphical fidelity as a Nintendo Switch.
So not only are you spending $3000, but the graphics you're seeing aren't even what the game actually looks like.
Might as well get a cheaper card and a pair of beer goggles.
So, the prices we've had aren't necessarily the prices we can get now.
