For nonSamsung phone users, you can still utilize the Smarttag2s with your android phones by using the uTag app from KieronQuinn (https://github.com/KieronQuinn/uTag) -
uTag is an Android app and mod for Samsung SmartThings which allows the use of Samsung SmartTags on non-Samsung Android devices running Android 11 or above. No root, no Shizuku needed. uTag allows the use of almost all SmartTag features. This includes setting up, connecting to and tracking Tags, ringing Tags, location history, precise finding with UWB (requires a UWB-capable device), left behind alerts and much more. In addition, uTag includes some features which Samsung's app does not have, such as widgets, safe areas for leaving Tags behind based on Wi-Fi networks and exporting location history.
Been using it with my Pixel 7 and SO's OnePlus 8

I have one very well hidden in my car. Yes, it can work in that capacity. When you connect the tag to your car, within the settings, you can designate where the "car" should be located. If it moves from your location, you will immediately receive a notification. From that point on, you can see its movements.

FYI you can use these Samsung tags on any Android phone. Look up the 3rd party uTag app.

To reiterate a bit, it does work like Apple and Tile where other Samsung phones that are in proximity of the tag can help report its location so your sepcific device doesn't have to be near it to get a location on it. This version also has a pet specific setting if you were to attach it to a collar, I'm not sure exactly what it does different but it seems like it's a baked in use case for this.

This is the actual tracker. Your friend find app is just an application. You can't do anything with just an application. You need both the physical tracker ( that does the actual tracking) and an app that displays the read out from said tracker.

I would argue that this Smart Things tracker is better than your friend find app ( plus tracker) because of the much greater user base of Samsung devices.

I hope this isn't a stupid question, but for the price and for my elderly parents, one of whom still uses an iPhone 6s, can this tracker and the uTag app work on iPhones and/or iPads?

I put one on my wife's keys since she's always losing them. They make a beeping sound but everything needs to be quiet to be able to hear. Takes about a minute to 2 minutes to go through the app and send the signal to call.

I think that this depends heavily on how you use them.

I have a set of these I keep in my luggage. Most of the time, they're either at my home or in a hotel room, not moving, and I only ever ping them while traveling. After almost two years, the batteries are still in great condition.​

Wow, didn't know that. Yes, it's kind ironic that Apple, who is known to be all about privacy this privacy that auto opts people in like that. I find that disrespectful and misleading. Thanks for the info.

That's not Google having "their own tag". They opened a service on their OS to allow 3rd parties to utilize with 3rd party trackers.

Just to clarify for some wanting to use for elderlies, pets or comparing to Find My(Friends).
This isnt a live tracker. At best 20feet off precision. Only thing Live about it is the Ringing you can do to call the tracker, vise versa. Location updates will be 15 minutes behind. Which is sometimes all you need and enough to find stationary things. also helps with battery.
to track live moving things, you'll need a phone-to-phone connection, and use Find My Device/Friends app. This tracker is a very minimal low power tool. not an e waste is all
