As someone who bought a Macbook Pro M1 Max with 64 GB ram couple of years back on a great deal from microcenter, I would say it is not worth paying this much for a laptop unless you have a very niche usecase.

The number of CPU and GPU cores. Unless you specifically know why you need more cores, I think it's fine to just get the one with less cores. It's still good.

Debating between the 24GB and 48GB variant of the 16" Pro. I keep my Macs for a long time. 7 and 8 years for my last two. Currently with a 15" MBP with 16GB of RAM and I notice there's a good bit of swap going on with my workflow. Nothing intensive but I wonder for the future if 24 will be enough or if I should jump to 48 and live with overkill for a few years.

Bigger SSD too...

I recently upgraded from a MacBook with the M1 Pro and 32GB of RAM. I basically got the same machine as the $2,299 configuration here, but from Microcenter when they had 15% going on. Although a lot of other people in my field say 16GB is more than enough, I was using up a bunch of swap even with 32GB. To be fair, the computer still ran fine for the most part, but there was definitely some lag here and there, and in rare cases, crashes. The 48GB is usually using no swap, or very little swap if I have two profiles signed in (personal and work). It's much better now. But the point is, I had to upgrade to entirely new machine only because I wanted more RAM. So if you're using a lot of swap with 16GB, I don't think 24GB is that much more, especially in the long run.

The swap amount ends up being about 1-2 GB with 16GB. I thought 24 would manage that better without being 100% utilized or close to it

Go for the 48GB. Especially if you're planning to keep this for 7-8 years; it's one of the best ways to future-proof your machine and ensure you'll get optimal performance for much longer.

Yeah, that's not bad. I don't think you can go wrong with the 24GB. It's hard to say what it'll be like in 7-8 years. If you can wait, there may be some deals on configurations with 32GB or 36GB of RAM too. 48GB can definitely be on the overkill side, but at least you'll never have a RAM problem!

You can't add RAM after the fact, you can connect external SSDs, that are also MUCH cheaper than Apple storage prices.

Get the RAM.

I'm playing a dangerous game here lol. Either I pull the trigger on some deals this week or I wait another 2-3 weeks and hope for similar, or better, deals for Prime Day.
