No TB3 40/32.5 Gbps, FYI. Falls back to USB on TB3 systems.

Oh man. Thanks for chiming in. That's disappointing. Guess we will be going with this one and it's cheaper.
Yep I'm doing the same. I couldn't believe how stupidly designed the Satechi is. There's 2-star review on Amazon that mirrors exactly what I saw. It's a totally boneheaded product.

I'll add that this is a performance option where you are paying for 2x or 4x the bandwidth over regular enclosures and for sustained cooling. As an example, Nikon Z8 and Z9 record raw video 8k N-LOG at 750MB/second. You need tons of bandwidth to be able to edit in your NLE. A $10 enclosure with a 1000MB/s ceiling will not cut it

ok so Thunderbolt = USB4?
In general yes. OWC has a chart that shows what devices will get the 40GB/s out of this enclosure and pretty much any PC with a thunderbolt 4 or USB4 port will get the near full speed. Macs get about 32GB/s and iPads can only get 10GB/s and Thunderbolt 3 is also limited to 10GB/s.

For people saying this isn't a deal, you will not get this kind of performance while keeping the SD cool with a cheap $20 enclosure on Amazon. I tried, they disconnect, they run the SD very hot or they only give you a fraction of the 40GB/s speed. You get what you pay for with this device.

Seriously. I see deals on enclosures for $10 all the time. No way it costs $109 more just to support USB4 with a little bit faster transfer speed. Anyone is nuts to consider this a slick deal.
For those that need performance this is a great deal. If you don't need USB 4 speed then the deal isn't for you.

decided to finally get this deal since I missed out on the last one. Now need to find a deal on a reliable nvme ssd. Any links to current sales that will work well with this enclosure? Pairing this up with the Mac mini.

The ACASIS TB405 is a much better buy if you need USB4/TB3/4 speeds while supporting USB 3. It has the Intel TB controller along with a USB controller for USB 10GB speeds. Works great on my 2025 MacBook Air at TB3 speeds, my Surface Book with USB 3 and my PC with USB4 using a 2TB WD SN850x.

Good deal. I paid $95 direct from OWC last November, when my M4 Mini was new.

TBU405 is $80 and cooling probably isn't as effective for sustained use

this is the original way to expand mac mini m4 before people making replaceable ssd. but when the SSD came out, they advertised SSD is better and doing this way has disconnect issues and sometimes won't boot up with external device, do you know it's because of people using the cheaper $20 devices? or this OWC has the same issue too?
I still haven't upgrade my Mac mini m4 due to the crazy price of the replacement SSD going up crazy due to the tarrifs

Went ahead and purchased the 2 TB Samsung 990 Pro for $139 with $10 code also from BH Photo. Will pair with this enclosure and connect to my lower spec Mac Mini and increase my overall storage! Thanks OP!

What makes this so much vastly better than the cheap ones I usually see for $12?
Which TB4 enclosures are you seeing for $12?

I have an acasis enclosure without the fan. Works well-but does get hot. I edit my photos in Lightroom directly off the drive from M1 Laptop. Haven't pulled the trigger on a mac mini m4 yet, but this acasis dock looks cool. And it supports 2 nvme's.

This OWC doesn't appear to have a fan either. Acasis does have a "pro" version that does have a fan. I needed an enclosure that worked with fastest speed and have backwards compatibility with my older laptop. I haven't noticed any issues with heat while using it with the wd black sn850x.
