These XX devices that play everything up to PS1 with some good results for Dreamcast, PSP, and N64. Around $60-80 retail, but often <$50 as here
The mid-level android based devices like the RG CUBE (not really comparable), Retroid 5, Retroid Flip 2, Retroid Mini 2 which will play the 32bit 3D platforms through PS2 including Gamecube. $150-$250 retail, but seldom significantly cheaper.
If you want WiiU, Switch, or PS3, then you're talking a PC-like handheld e.g. SteamDeck, Ally, etc. > $400.
Controls and screen dimensions vary greatly for the low end as the old emulation is less dependent on analog sticks and triggers. I believe there are so many variants because they are cheap and can be nostalgic, but under the hood, the XX devices are all the same. 16x9 or wide screen with more modern controls makes sense for the mid-tier, esp if you want to stream games to PS5, Xbox, or Moonlight/Sunshine.
What makes this one - CubeXX nice as compare to the other XX devices is the higher res, more vertical screen and nicer sticks. If I didn't already have other XX devices, I'd definitely pick this one up.
I don't have a mid tier device as I'm a very casual gamer - just a quick 15-30 minutes here and there. If I were to spend a lot of time on a modern games, I'd do it on a Steamdeck or Ally. I dabble in the mid-tier by using an older Samsung S20FE and a Gamesir G8 Galileo to see what it would be like - but there seems to be a lot more customization required in the mid-tier and I just don't have time.

if I'm honest, I still prefer these smaller handheld devices for quick games to pass the time on the go, but I like the steamdeck for games while I'm lounging at home

only want this because got gf a new vehicle and shes been doing all the driving. lol. I want to replay the original gameboy/color pokemon games, red/blue/silver. never played anything else, I played the diamond/pearl or whatever one on switch last year or two.
but I want a handheld just for gameboy/gbc, and ive never played GBA pokemon. but id prob like too.
so cubeXX or 40xxh?
MAYBE venture into a few rpg ps1's like legend of the dragoon/final fantasies maybe. but ps1 is not priority, just the pokemons. I considered the trimui pro one, but it looks just too large for convenience. I do like the handles on the CubeXX, I would have gotten the 406H if the d pad was on top just like the cubexx. has the larger screen which I think would be awesome. but since im focused on d pad games, want d pad on top, and analog on bottom like playstation.
The big bonus I didn't expect is portmaster, which isn't available on the more powerful android-based devices but works really simply and intuitively on the XX linux-based devices. Just yesterday I added the Mario Kart 64 decompilation that released for PCs literally a day earlier - that is how fast people are getting stuff onto portmaster. Playing the game at 45 fps and 720x540 is a joy. And of course great modern ports like Balatro, etc. I even played through the entirety of Portal on the machine.
I also highly recommend Knulli as an OS, though it uses up a bunch of extra ram and people love other CFWs as well. I'm just devoted to emulationstation because I'm used to it on my pi4.
