Basically there are three tiers:

These XX devices that play everything up to PS1 with some good results for Dreamcast, PSP, and N64. Around $60-80 retail, but often <$50 as here
The mid-level android based devices like the RG CUBE (not really comparable), Retroid 5, Retroid Flip 2, Retroid Mini 2 which will play the 32bit 3D platforms through PS2 including Gamecube. $150-$250 retail, but seldom significantly cheaper.
If you want WiiU, Switch, or PS3, then you're talking a PC-like handheld e.g. SteamDeck, Ally, etc. > $400.

Controls and screen dimensions vary greatly for the low end as the old emulation is less dependent on analog sticks and triggers. I believe there are so many variants because they are cheap and can be nostalgic, but under the hood, the XX devices are all the same. 16x9 or wide screen with more modern controls makes sense for the mid-tier, esp if you want to stream games to PS5, Xbox, or Moonlight/Sunshine.
What makes this one - CubeXX nice as compare to the other XX devices is the higher res, more vertical screen and nicer sticks. If I didn't already have other XX devices, I'd definitely pick this one up.
I don't have a mid tier device as I'm a very casual gamer - just a quick 15-30 minutes here and there. If I were to spend a lot of time on a modern games, I'd do it on a Steamdeck or Ally. I dabble in the mid-tier by using an older Samsung S20FE and a Gamesir G8 Galileo to see what it would be like - but there seems to be a lot more customization required in the mid-tier and I just don't have time.

Can someone dumb down what this is? Can you actually put GameCube games in these and it will play on the screen? From what I read this one is not going to work, but I'd be willing to spend more to do that.
No this one will won't play past like ps1/n64. Even some n64 will be buggy. Need the regular rg cube(not xx, or any anbernic without the xx) for GameCube, those are android, the xx are Linux.

You'll have to spend mid/high 200s for something capable of GCN/PS2
I thought the RG cube can do this? it's 154 at the moment.. also the switch light is selling for $99 on some places and can do at least GC well.

I'm showing $71.12, and the code cannot be applied "for security reasons."

AliExpress, you never fail to confound me.

Hi zhamilton Smilie Sorry for the trouble. I had a look after seeing your comment and it appears that (somehow) the redirect was broken and going to an incorrect landing page. It should be sorted out now. Thanks!

i went for the rg35xx H over this because of its portability factor and probably has a longer battery life with the smaller and less pixeled screen. Ive been playing streets of rage 3 on it, and button mashing beat em ups is pretty hard on my thumbs on the 35xx H. Im assuming the ergonomics on the xx cube resolves this mostly

Yep, that's the Cube, this is the CubeXX. Same physical design, different processing power, software, and price.

god damn, im good ill just get a steam deck
that's similar to my conclusion. once I needed above a certain price point to play games more demanding games I wanted, I waited for a refurbished steamdeck @$280ish https://store.steampowered.com/sa...efurbished

if I'm honest, I still prefer these smaller handheld devices for quick games to pass the time on the go, but I like the steamdeck for games while I'm lounging at home

cubexx vs 40xxh

only want this because got gf a new vehicle and shes been doing all the driving. lol. I want to replay the original gameboy/color pokemon games, red/blue/silver. never played anything else, I played the diamond/pearl or whatever one on switch last year or two.

but I want a handheld just for gameboy/gbc, and ive never played GBA pokemon. but id prob like too.

so cubeXX or 40xxh?

MAYBE venture into a few rpg ps1's like legend of the dragoon/final fantasies maybe. but ps1 is not priority, just the pokemons. I considered the trimui pro one, but it looks just too large for convenience. I do like the handles on the CubeXX, I would have gotten the 406H if the d pad was on top just like the cubexx. has the larger screen which I think would be awesome. but since im focused on d pad games, want d pad on top, and analog on bottom like playstation.

I bought two of these to set up and gift to my 9-year-old daughter and 6-year-old nephew, and I find myself stealing my daughter's to play on all the time (even over my steam deck). The 1:1 screen is phenomenal for so many early systems (pretty much all early handhelds were close to 1x1) and obviously work great for vertical shmups and other games.

The big bonus I didn't expect is portmaster, which isn't available on the more powerful android-based devices but works really simply and intuitively on the XX linux-based devices. Just yesterday I added the Mario Kart 64 decompilation that released for PCs literally a day earlier - that is how fast people are getting stuff onto portmaster. Playing the game at 45 fps and 720x540 is a joy. And of course great modern ports like Balatro, etc. I even played through the entirety of Portal on the machine.

I also highly recommend Knulli as an OS, though it uses up a bunch of extra ram and people love other CFWs as well. I'm just devoted to emulationstation because I'm used to it on my pi4.

in terms of the ergonomics this is my favorite of the low-end emulation handhelds; I ditched the 35xx and 35xx H, and even the similar-display-but-more-capable Powkiddy RGB30 in favor of this one. I still have a TrimUI Brick to scratch that Gameboy-looking-vertical itch but honestly every device that's physically smaller or thinner than this has proved uncomfortable to hold for more than 15 minutes at a time, and once you're attaching grips/cases you're in the same size/weight territory as this thing anyways.
What games do you play on this?

What's the consensus on this versus the TrimUI Brick? The Brick appears to have great build quality and screen quality though the screen and device are small. Is this better to get for the larger 1:1 screen and better ergonomics? Price seems similar for both.
