Unless stated otherwise they do not have any storage and you need to populate it with your own drives. They do have memory though, they're literally a computers with a custom OS ready to go

This seems like a better deal than those Synology ones that have puny CPUs. This one would work well with Plex. The only questions are reliability and ease of setting them up without built in NAS software.

as far as I know every custom OS includes docker or kubernetes etc. also I believe this OEM lets you install your own OS without voiding the warranty.

It's not a new price (it's been sitting at this price for a little while with either a flat rate coupon or percentage).

It's a good system, and probably my go-to. The similar Ugreen nas (4800U I think) with the pentium CPU is about on par with this for overall performance. However, for a system with the oomph to run containers for services in the background and run zraid pools (running TrueNAS or some such), I'd rather have more cores with slightly less performance, than less cores that are more powerful.

Yup I got it with a similar coupon on May 25th. I had the non pro but needed some more cores this does the job for Jellyfin and my arr stack

What is the OS? Can you reinstall it with TrueNas or another Linux distro.

I have an old one of these terra master and let me tell you it runs everything I throw at it. Including an instance of PLEX and EMBY at the same time streaming. And it only has half the ram.

Also the apps are native to the OS, so no need for docker or any of that nonsense. Best money I ever spent.

Dang. I'm tempted. I was considering a N150 mini PC + DAS, but this would be better from a pure storage perspective. USB connection for hard drive enclosure -> PC would be inferior compared to this and at best I'd save some small amount money with JBOD setup or none if I go with a RAID supported enclosure.

It's Terramaster's OS, or literally TOS, https://www.terra-master.com/us/alltos/

I believe most off the shelf NAS devices do allow you to put an alternate OS on there as you want, however some will void your warranty if you do so, so that's something worth looking into.

What do you want your NAS to do? If you are only using it to store stuff there are much cheaper options out there. If you're looking at making a media server with Plex/Jellyfin/etc, then it's not bad at all.

I bought one of these a few months back, and it has been great. The TOS software looked okay, but I bought a mini USB thumb drive and installed Unraid. It is very easy to replace the internal USB drive upon which the default OS is installed. You have to unscrew a few screws to make space, but some people have just flexed the mobo. I have plex and Pi-hole running, which is actually fast enough to use remotely due to the 2.5 ghz duplex connection.

Pretty much just storing files. What do you suggest?
