Router kind of sucked until I installed Merlin. Specifically the 5ghz channel crashing very regularly.

This is not my experience at all. This has been the most stable router I've had since my Linksys WRT-54G running DD-WRT. And I run the stock firmware because I like the parental controls and the phone app.

It's could be upstream from you @ your provider configuring their network.
I had same drop outs almost like 10x/ day for quite a time with Comcrap at the start of the pandemic.
Turns out it was my Moto modem not able to handle all the network stuff Comcrap was doing upstream evven tho it was on Comcrap's approved modem list.

Been running an Asus RT-AC1900 forever.. Any real upside to going to a newer unit? Most IOT items are 2.4g anyhow... Running it in AP mode only and all the big stuff is ethernet connected.. Any better range or anything?

It's been EOL'd (end of life) by Asus. So eventually it will stop receiving security/firmware updates. That's it.

I'd assume most people running the ac1900 are running fresh tomato, which should keep it up to date security wise.

Is fresh tomato any better than asus wrt? Would wrt also keep the security updates?
