Usually you use a normal metal detector to narrow down a spot. Use a shovel to dig a small hole. Then use this to sift through the dirt to find the metal

Pinpointing where metal is located in dirt mostly. Typically just used by folks with metal detectors after they found a target area they will stick this in the spot to find exactly where the metal is. That is why these are called "pinpointers".They detect metal with a very finite distance. A few inches max usually on cheaper ones and in a normal substance like plain dirt or sand.
