I actually got this for $50 more from Best Buy a few months ago. It's a solid unit. If you get this from Lowe's though, be sure to test it thoroughly during the return period, which is only 48 hours.

No, they are two mostly separate units (in case you need to service them, they can be detached), but they share the control panel in the middle and a few other parts. The benefit is mostly that the top unit is much easier to reach than a stacked unit in case you have any children or otherwise short people that need to use it.
