You lose it in the sense that if you don't have an active subscription, you are unable to play it. If you let your subscription expire, but then rejoin at a later date, all games you had prior to expiration will be available again for you to play. Please anyone correct me if I'm wrong and something has changed, but that was confirmed to me by playstation last November.
This should still be the same.
