Plus is newer, but the biggest upgrade on the plus is the LiFePO4 battery which is safer and rated for 3K charge cycles. The li-ion battery will only support hundreds of cycles before significant degredation. One of the attributes of LiFePO4 batteries (which contributes to their improved safety profile) is a lower density than li-ion which usually results in them being a bit heavier than li-on
