Cool dripper to collect for coffee nerds and a solid choice to travel with, but the heat loss with stainless kinda makes it a non-starter for daily use. Much better off using ceramic to maintain higher/more consistent temps throughout the brew.

Ceramic has thermal loss also. Should be preheating with hot water before adding grounds if you want to get all James Hoffman about it.

Of course every material has heat loss, but theres no question that SS conducts heat much much faster than ceramic.

I put my ceramic dripper on top of my kettle as the water boils to heat it with steam. Ceramic definitely does lose some heat, but all materials do and its the best option

I wouldn't be surprised if the ceramic has more thermal mass than the stainless due to wall thickness.

It does have more thermal mass, I'm wondering if you're confusing thermal mass with thermal conductivity. The thick ceramic models take longer to get up to temperature because they have more thermal mass, more material to actually heat up. But they also retain that heat for longer because of the fact that more energy is stored in that extra material, and because it doesn't conduct as well as stainless. The steel funnel will get up to temp very quickly because of the fact that it doesn't have much thermal mass and conducts heat very well, but that also means that it will continue to draw heat from the brew and lose it to the surrounding air much quicker than ceramic.

Agree with heat loss comment for the metal V60, even with pre-heating. The basic plastic V60 is what I use and seems to have least heat loss or is similar to ceramic and doesn't require pre-heating step ceramic does.

nope not confusing it. so if the plastic version is less conductive and also less thermal mass, it's obviously superior and not to mention cheaper than the ceramic.

Superior in the sense that it maintains temperature, yes. But there are a lot of people that are understandable skeptical about putting boiling water in any plastic day in and day out, myself included. So sure, it will hold heat better, but it's not worth it to me.
