Clearance at Woot on 'new' 2018 i7 Mac minis, 32GB RAM, 128GB SSD, space gray.

Great price for the specs with this model. Low storage but solid RAM, and it's a lot simpler to slap on additional storage (the RAM is technically upgradeable, but it's not easy). And if you really want to go whole hog, being the last mini with an Intel chip it's also the last to support eGPUs, which can make them better for gaming than just about any modern Mac in spite of the outdated CPU.

What can these be used for? What are your best ideas? Creative and/or practical

Might get this to use it as a HTPC as the 8th gen Intel CPU still supports SGX and it should be pretty quiet compared to other custom build SFF PCs.
However, adding an external optical drive and an external graphics card for madVR would make the setup somewhat cluttered.

I was looking for a living room computer to drive two 4K monitors for moderate tasks (multiple users, web, office, maybe Moonlight) when I ran across this. Fits the bill pretty beautifully.

Could simultaneously be a pretty decent server for all sorts of things. Maybe I'll set up a Minecraft Docker container for the kids.

just FYI but you can find tons of PC desktops at $100 that can be a hackintosh and you get upgradability. Also, the M2 macs are getting dumped and those prices are dropping fast too. These Minis with the i7 throttled like crazy due to heat so don't think you are getting a 4K editing machine. 128gb leaves you with 90gb so you are most likely getting an external drive/dock too.

You could probably install Mac OS on one.

"Better for gaming" you'll be bottle necked by the dated CPU even if you put a high end GPU.

Lots of games aren't remotely CPU-bound at reasonable frame rates. Not saying this is your ideal gaming machine, but if you specifically want to game on a Mac, for most this and an eGPU will probably serve you better than anything outside a higher-end Mac Studio (and it'll let you dual-boot Windows). It'll also drive more monitors than anything besides a Studio.

e-waste? When the M1 and M2 minis are being sold at considerable discounts, it's super hard to justify any intel mac at any price point. You'll be wasting more in power and heat generation alone.

Can you back this statement up? It seems emotional and not fact based.

The slight premium is worth it as this is reliable hardware that, odds are, could be running 10-15 years from now. You wouldn't necessarily still be wanting to run it then but it's not going to be failing a year or two down the line like a lot of the new small name companies in the mini pc market.

Google.com has plenty of info on how the M1 and M2 chips are more power efficient.
