It will not but would be useful for trade in or possibility of 3rd party unlock too. But for $160 it is a solid iPod replacement too.

Are there any other steps to bypass the 12 months service requirement? Like having first and last month service type of thing?

Not even worth the hassle since it has to stay locked for a period of 12 months and in order to unlock the phone you can't just set it and forget it, you have to keep service active on the phone for that period of time, consecutively. Lastly, Boost Mobile as a service provider is "L' altogether.
