Part of the Nintendo Summer Sale, many of the Ys games are available.
From what I've read, Origin is a good place to hop in, but Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of DANA is also highly recommended .

While I've only played 8-10 and the Vita one I forget the name of now, IMO 8 is the best of the "new" series. Interesting story, even if the flashback sequences seem pretty odd and disjointed at first, and a pretty solid Zelda, or even Metroid, like experience of puzzle solving and only being able to access certain areas after specific conditions have been met.
Both 9 & 10 were technically solid, but the story didn't really do much for me and it felt like new areas were opened up without a lot of work. In 8, being stranded on an island, you have to track down a certain number of other stranded passengers to be able to clear the path to certain areas. In 9 and 10 it just felt like things opened up purely based on advancing to a specific point in the story. Made it a touch too easy. All the story related areas in 8 had pretty low requirements, but it encouraged exploring and made a sort of side fetch quest fun and more rewarding. They also worked things like upgrading your weapons into the plot of the story. Also, the sort of tower defense battles you'd do every so often seemed a lot more fun than anything in 9 and in 10 the little bases you can storm are just so incredibly easy it's no real challenge at all.
