Got my kid the older 1st gen SE cellular and the location tracker practically nonexistent. The watch died within a day they misplaced it and iCloud won't keep a record of the location a couple days later. On the fence about getting a replacement since series 9 and above has precision location tracker, but this won't be any much better if they lose it again?
The Series 10 (GPS) is a good value at $299 but for your kid I'd recommend getting a refurbished Series 9 with cellular. The 9 and 10 have better battery life than previous gens.
You can get the top-tier Premium condition (basically like-new) at BackMarket for $229. It's a steal. You can also get a standalone "Apple Watch For Your Kids" plan from US Mobile for $78/yr (tax included). The kid doesn't need to have an iPhone; it's independent but connected to the parent's Apple account.If tracking their location is a priority, this is definitely your best bet. I'm finally going to need to upgrade my series 4, watch battery died last night by 8 pm. I guess it lasted several years, but not sure if the new ones will last as many.
