They're just price matching and poaching off of Barnes & Nobles July Criterion sale. Support the last few remaining retailers that actually still sell physical media. Buy from B&N!
The Criterion release blu-ray release has the following:
4K digital restoration of the director's cut, supervised and approved by director Richard Linklater, with 5.1 surround DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack
Audio commentary featuring Linklater
Making "Dazed,"a documentary by Kahane Cooperman
Rare on-set interviews and behind-the-scenes footage
Footage from the ten-year-anni versary celebration
Audition footage and deleted scenes
Trailer
PLUS: Essays by critics Kent Jones and Chuck Klosterman
What's insulting is comparing a standard release of a film vs a boutique label release like Criterion is putting out. Is everyone going to want this? Of course not but its pretty simple, if you don't want these extra features don't purchase the release.

So if Amazon is poaching...don't they have to also have and sell the physical medium to price match?
Reminder: B&N > Amazon for a number of reasons...the most relevant being that you can find B&N credit for 10-20% off and use that during Criterion sales
Just got The Wiz Criterion 4k for $27 in credit, which means maybe $22 out of pocket
I picked up Paper Moon 4K and Happiness 4K that have been on sale the last couple of days for under $20. Then bought Defending Your Life Blu-ray for $20 since I have yet to run across the non-Criterion version in the wild.

Is this pretty much the best price you're going to get on Criterion?Do Criterion do the BS where they first remaster the HD, and then later the 4k to double dip the profits?
Except for some rare one-offs this is the best price you're going to get. With regards to the blu-ray/4K game not really not really. They weren't real quick to start doing 4K releases, but since they've been doing them, I'd say 80% of their releases are 4K (with separate releases for Blu-ray). They have been going back and doing some 4K only releases on films they previously only released in blu-ray before they were doing 4K.

Annoying why they stuck to BR//HD for so long rather than just 4k if it was possible to begin with.

I think the challenge was making 3 formats isn't very profitable for them and they didn't want to lose the sales from the libraries across the country who buy DVDs. Personally, I couldn't care less about 4K and will never buy one.

How can one get this credit?

Do people really buy Criterion DVDs?
I feel like if you get Criterion content, you're an enthusiast that wants the best quality due to the high price.
