For this money, you should get a drive with DRAM.

DRAM-less is a downer but this drive does have an interesting edge use case. If your motherboard has lane sharing on the M.2 PCI-E Gen 5 slot that drops down to 2 lanes, this drive can still hit its max rated Gen 4 speeds.

Hope price will go further down. This was the price i bought my 4tb 990 Pro. Hope to see that again.
I have DRAM less 4 tb(crucial p3 plus) for games, works good for storage and games. I keep my OS on the 990Pro

Memory makers are making as much High Bandwidth Memory as possible, and so they stopped making DDR4 - we saw what happened in that market. I expect we will see prices stay flat for now and go up later this year. I got in for one drive - you won't see 4TB from a name brand maker (still reluctant to use Team Group for my ThinkPads) below $200 for a long time. SSD makers are still smarting from the crash on SSD 2-3 years ago. (and SSD makers and memory makers are the same company - Samsung, SK Hynix, and Micron).

A friend of mine works at Micron for procurement told me SSD prices will not drop anytime soon. At least for Micron, they are only maintaining or even decreasing NAND chips production and focusing more on HBM memories chips due to the current AI demand. Moreover, HBM chips has more profit margin when comparing to NAND chips according to my friend.
I am sure other companies, such as Samsung and SK Hynix, are facing similar market condition at the moment. As a result, you may not see any significant price change.
Note that the $200/4TB Samsung 990 pro/WD SN850X era was due to over production during covid/post-covid time, and companies actually did not making money on those items (according to my friend).

You're right about DRAM vs pSLC, however HMB doesn't make things functionally identical to a drive having actual DRAM. HMB generally utilizes in the ballpark of 32-64MB of system RAM. Drives with DRAM ideally have a ratio of 1000:1 NANDRAM. The 4TB 990 Pro has 4GB of DRAM, which is WAY more than 64MB of HMB. As far as the practical implications, most people are unlikely to notice the difference, but there will be edge cases.
Prime edge case is when you use these drives in an external enclosure.

In for one! Gonna be my new dedicated gaming drive, Already have its older sibling, the 990 Pro as my main/boot drive

This is the 990 EVO. This is not even remotely close to your pro in specs.

You might be right, but as they say, hope dies last. I am still regretting I didn't buy a couple more 4tb Samsungs back then.
One the other hand for games and such, DRAM less drives are perfectly fine... even the old gen 3 drives are perfectly fine for games. Load times between gen 3 and 4 and 5 are so negligible that it's not worth the price difference. I usually try to get the most dependable drive(based on reviews) that is affordable. Those Samsungs pros were a great deal back in the day.

I've just picked up a base Mac Mini M4. Satechi dock arriving soon. Can anyone advise what is the best drive is? (I'm not familiar with gen 4/5 or what specs are the main bottlenecks, etc.)

I don't qualify for the discount. This is a SLICK deal. I recently got the 990 (not PRO), and it's blazing fast. This one is even faster. But I have to pay more- and don't really need it now (but if I could get the discount, it would be mine, BABY).

Looking for extra storage. This good for installing games on without an OS?
It's more than adequate for the vast majority of use cases, including games and as an OS drive.

While it's true that HMB won't work on external drives, most people aren't going to be using external drives in a way that DRAM would make a major difference anyway.
