I bought this and hate it. Mainly because they force you to download the dji app to use it. I took it back and bought a hero.
I own a DJI Osmo Action 4 and a GoPro Hero 11. They both function similarly where you can download an app to use them but you don't need it to extract photos. You can plug in the cameras to the computer via USB and transfer files or use an SD card reader.
The apps aren't the greatest but they both allow you retrieve a clip of a video for quick sharing and update your camera's firmware.
I'm not sure what you went through but I was not forced to download any app from either company to use the camera.

Big thanks for clarifying. I was wondering exactly this. Very helpful and repped.

Straight lies. I have the the osmo action 5 and the only things the app are used for is initial setup for registering with DJI and if you want to upload photos or video directly to your camera. It's not that big of a deal

The amount of people who insist you dont need the app is insane. It is factual that the app is required.
With Dji, if purchased new, for the initial setup you must download the app to activate the camera for use. Without agreeing to their "licensure" you are permitted, I believe 5 trial uses, before you are mandated agreement for further use. It is absolutely shitty practice and you are most definitely forced to use the app.
Whether you are aware of what you agreed to or the process that you set about is another issue, absurd in and of itself.
Tempted to purchase another one at this price. I really like the Action 4, been using it to record my hikes and some runs with a cheap Amazon chest harness.

No, the 5 is the latest. They are probably planning on releasing new one soon if they are lowering price on this one.

Makes no sense why people would make ignorant comments like this.
Of note, this and two other Action 4 combos go on sale regularly in the $189-$209 range. If you miss it this time around, just wait a few weeks.
I read that you have to give DJI complete permission to your photo library. So I wonder if my privacy is given up if I accept.
