For smaller households, the 4L version is marked down to $175. I've had it for 8 years and it's still going strong. https://a.co/d/b2Ex7GX

These are one of those lifestyle items that once you have it, you can't imagine not having it. Just a note, if you use hard tap water you will need to clean it frequently. We've got an undersink RO system and never have to clean ours. I performatively did it a few weeks ago after like a year, but it was completely unnecessary.

Does the water in your kettle stay hot indefinitely?

I have this same model for few years and didn't have plastic smell, it is true that cheaper and older model plastic ring didn't last very long, but this model is pretty good and VE technology help keep water warm and use less energy. Sure this is expensive and is not for everyone.

I second to this. It is a good product from japan. I have the 4l model for 10+years and have no complaints at all. No smells, clean and always works. I am very picky on smells and I can tell any taste difference in plain water.

This is the problem I've read with pretty much all of these units. The lids aren't designed to last more than a year or two. The plastic housing where the steam is released eventually becomes brittle causing plastic to leach into the water. I'm still using an old Bonavita water boiler and a vacuum sealed thermos to store the water after boiling to avoid the plastic issue, but ever time these deals show up I wonder if it is worth that risk for the overall convenience they offer
Just bought one from eBay that had this problem. Got a refund and got to keep it. Bought a second one for 75 which had a good lid but the reservoir piece was worn out. Easy swap.
If your household drinks hot beverages more than 6 times a day this thing might be worth it. It all depends on what temps you need.
My wife wants boiling water at 208. I drink genmatcha so I need it to be 185 coming out of the spout to cool down to the 175 required for that tea. Problem is my wife drinks her tea before me so she has to use the quick boil setting to bring it up from 195 (there's no 185 setting) to boiling. Which means she has to wait about the same amount of time it would take to boil a kettle for a single person.
And since she used quick boil, I am stuck using extra hot water since it takes an hour for it to go from 208 to 185.
Other problem for me is it doesn't have 185 setting so I have to use the 195 which is too hot. I have to add some water in advance to my cup to get the right temp.
Had it for two weeks and I am going to post it back on eBay and get a regular kettle that has more granular temp settings.
For my family's needs this didn't work out for us even at 75 dollars from eBay.

What the heck? I have had the same $15 electric kettle for a decade, still looks and works great. I can't imagine how this could be 15 times better.
are you a light user? I've burned through a couple cheap kettles. My Asian family are heavy tea drinkers with my mother making tea all throughout the day. this remains hot and ready while a cheap kettles will start to cool which requires waiting for reheats. we refill our 4 liter Zojirushi a little less than twice a day. there certainly are cheaper options, but this is much more convenient and this company is well known for quality long lasting products.

Yep same here, it became much more useful than I thought as we have it next to the stove and I often use it for cooking as well.

I picked up the white 4L for $140 recently.
It's great for oatmeal, Ramen and tea.

I've had the 4L VE for about a week now (recent deal from Best Buy). It's well-insulated and super convenient for cooking and for making tea. Highly recommended

This is easily one of the most useful things I've purchased after seeing it on SD - and I've been using SD for more than 15 years. I bought a similar Zojirushi water boiler/warmer like this five years ago after seeing it on SD. I didn't hook it up until last year, because of laziness, and because we were already using an electric kettle (also from SD) that takes only a couple of minutes to heat up the water. My family now uses the Zojirushi water heater multiple times a day, and during the colder months, I have to refill this once daily (we are a big family). Getting a small amount of hot water for a drink is now just an instant and easy button press any time of the day, instead of microwaving or waiting for the kettle. As we use a reverse osmosis water system for drinking water (also from SD), I have not had any scale build up at all yet. My whole family keeps asking me why I waited so long to hook it up. It so much better than an electric kettle. I would purchase another one at full price if our current one stops working. Sorry for the wall of text...this new slickdeals app is not allowing paragraphs.

The stainless always started to rust in a few month. do not buy.
I have two Zojirushi water boilers, older models. the oldest being 22 years old, the second oldest just hit 20 years old. Neither has any rust on the stainless.

If you are getting rust, you either bought a knock off (there are tons of knockoffs on the market) or your water quality is really poor.

The lid and seal need to be replaced every a few years because the plastic/rubber degrades under the harsh working conditions. An added problem is Z does not sell parts when a model gets old. So buy replacement parts when you purchase the boiler.

If you're going to purchase something like this, another benefit of these insulated systems is energy usage. They're 15-20 watts less than noninsulated ones. Over the course of a couple years that can make the insulated ones much cheaper overall.
