What a stupid decision by sega. I know quite a few people with the switch 1 version. An upgrade path would have been free money.

I'm a complete noob here. Got a switch 2 and found that the games I bought (Paw Patrol, Mario Party Superstar) are both native Switch 1 and work just fine.

What's the upgrade path you speak of? I thought Switch 2s were backwards compatible with all games

Switch 1 games play in the same exact way on the Switch 2 as they did on the Switch 1 console. Nintendo (for example) upgraded Zelda games and Pokemon to the Switch 2 version which makes them run at 60 fps, faster load speeds atc... Switch 1 games on Switch 2 are essentially "emulated" and hardly take advantage of the new hardware.
