I bought one of these a few months ago and it's a great controller, the only major flaw is that the d pad is pretty subpar but that seems to be a problem with a lot of controllers nowadays.

Does the gyro on this still just emulate the movements of the right stick, or can it be properly setup in Steam to control the mouse?

I disagree. The d-pad is one of the best I've used. It feels tactile without being loud and clicky like the Xbox's controller.
