Is this good for the steam deck? I know some of these types of drives have thermal issues.

Tom's Hardware generally liked this drive for the Steam Deck and other portable gaming applications.

I've had the OEM version (sn740) of this in my OLED deck (since a month after that released) and have been very happy with it, not a single issue.

Prove it. I have never seen any 2230 drives have heat problems inside a steam deck.

From what I researched you will need an enclosure for it to work

Or a second M-series Mac to make installation work.

The SN740 is tuned to be a little cooler / lower power draw than the SN770 (even though it would be running at PCIe 3), which is helpful for the Steam Deck, though likely imperceptibly lower performance.

It would definitely work in a Steam Deck, but it might be a little overkill, running a little hotter / higher power consumption (despite being PCIe 4) than options a little cheaper than this (even with the sale price). You'll get pretty tiny performance differences in the SD compared with e.g. the SN740 or Sabrent Rocket.

Very niche concern: I tried running one of these as an external drive in a 2230 enclosure with active cooling. Apparently, the slight added consumption of the fan was enough to kick the power draw over the limit of the Steam Deck's (low power provision) USB port, and it would occasionally disconnect while installing games. It seemed to work fine in an enclosure without active cooling. The Micron 2400 (same one that came with my Steam Deck OLED but higher capacity) that I ended up replacing the internal drive with worked fine with the actively cooled enclosure.
