As they were returned, how to find out they are authentic apple but not forfeit itemswere returned, as Amazon can't check the genuine of the item during their return

Any thoughts?

This is a really good point. Most people do not know how good the "replicas" from AliExpress/Random Store look, right down to the packaging. I would caution folks from buying this used from Amazon. You can get lucky, but I'd advise against it despite the price being very attractive.

Eh, I bit on this deal for the ANC variant for $97. Figure it's cheap enough to finally compare these to my trusty pro 2's.

If they seem counterfeit, or not near the pro 2 in quality I'll just return

I purchased Airpods Max on FB Marketplace and it paired fine and even showed up in FindMy. It was 100% fake with just okay sound quality and not all features worked on it.
