Keep in mind this is considered one of the top 4k blu ray players regarding performance(ie tonemapping, upscaling).
Often people are willing to sacrifice that benefit for many reasons like other tech.
A game console is a good example, you give up DV to have the capability to play movies & games on one product.
For most people, especially those with all 4Ks, the UB-450 is a better choice. The UB-154 if you have a Samsung TV, a TV that doesn't support dolby vision, or a projector (most don't support dolby vision). Both are less than $200.
The problem is that the 450 was not available for a long time here and the 820 became the "default recommendation" and it simply gets repeated by people

From personal experience, I disagree on many fronts.
1st off tone mapping & upscaling are not useless, the opposite, completely a requirement.
Not all 4k displays are the same quality.
So IF a display was even better it would only be the top of the line Oled display.
I would give up Dolby Vision before giving up the HCX chipset & Optimizer.
In basic terms the Optimizer optimizes(tone maps) the metadata to the best capabilities of display you have it connected to.
That's why it's a must have for a PJ.
The HCX chipset is used in their Oled displays & they are considered one of the best.
Their new Oled displays are using the new HCX chipset!
Look how popular Samsung displays are and they don't support Dolby Vision.
Let's not forget 4k content varies widely in quality, not all includes dynamic HDR, not all get audio upgrade or it's included on the BR disc also.
Shipped from eletronicclub fulfilled by Walmart.
FYI this should not be compared to game controls since they do not support DV/HDR10+ on disc.
It's better to compare it to the 420.

I remeber these being sub $100 on a regular 10 years back and much cheaper on SD.
Is this the only technology which is going up in price.
An XBOX/PS5 is $500 and that has a Blu-Ray included along with everything else.

edit: it is $408 directly from amazon if you trust where they source it.

Well it's actually a 4k UHD blu ray player.
Yes the X/PS5 can play 4k disc also but they don't support Dolby Vision on disc, this does.
So you should be comparing it to Panasonic's 420 model.
