I've been ordering gildan shirts for years from Amazon, I don't think I've ever had a single hole in one. These aren't those super thin undershirts if that's what you're imagining. For the price, they last way longer than you'd expect them to.

They are all designed to get holes in them these days for planned obsolescence. I would say they are similar quality. The main difference I think was that the Hanes have pockets.

This matches my experience. The cotton ones have a decent feel. The fit and weight is perfect for either an undershirt, sleeping or mucking around and I haven't run into any issues with holes or loose threads.

Gildan by far. Hanes are really thin these days. I liken Gildan quality to what Fruit of the Loom was back in the day. Not quite as good as Hanes but clearly a quality #2.
For reference, I wear a Gildan Tee almost every day and have done so for at least 5 years.

Can these be worn untucked without looking sloppy?

I'm not sure why this has so many upvotes. Have any of these people ever actually worn Gildan T-shirts? I had one and the quality was garbage. The fabric was so thin. I can't imagine they all of a sudden became better quality. I would never buy this brand again.

I wear the Gildan ones a lot, so I certainly do get my money's worth. The ones that get holes are still in use for yard work, etc. I think the holes are from belts, it's around that area. Hanes has different lines, some are thin and some are okay. I thought the ones on sale were the good ones, guess we'll see. Got delivered today.
