I know these are authentic but I just bought my kid these things off AliExpress at less then $0.30/straight track. For him they are indistinguishable vs Lego. We did 3D print some as well but in the end the AliExpress are injection molded ABS and had a much better fit then the ones we printed

tell me more, friend. tell me more. kiddos just aged into it and we have built a tank car which came with only one piece of track for it to sit on. not a very exciting journey, but i've balked at spending the highway ransom they seem to charge for track. we did a lot of 3d printing for the wooden trains, esp connectors between different brands.

LOL THIS. I learned a similar lesson with Brio vs. everything else. Oftentimes brand name is total BS. In Lego case to date - absolute Lego hands down. Too many reasons to support my claim, so if you disagree have fun when figuring out why that was a mistake.

So like... in conclusion, the generic track is the way to go? And .3 a section is approx the price I should be looking for?

For what it's worth, the general wisdom that I picked up is that static track pieces are fine to get off-brand, and to stick to Lego brand for track pieces with moving parts. I've picked up a few things since December; the off-brand straight and curved pieces I got from amazon I've had no problems with. The off-brand track-switch pieces I got do seem to work slightly less smoothly than the Lego brand ones I have.
