If you like this, you'll love the Star Wars Radio Dramas. These released soon after the original movies and featured many of the same actors and all of the original music and sound effects. They also include some additional scenes that were cut from the movies.

Which came first? This book or the movies themselves?
Movie first. According to George Lucas himself in multiple interviews I've seen, Star Wars was a movie script he shopped around Hollywood after his first big movie American Graffiti was a hit. It actually went through multiple story revisions because Han Solo at one point was going to be a green alien. You can see drawings of it in the Empire of Dreams documentary. Amazingly enough no other studio except 20th Century Fox wanted it due to it sounding expensive to make which is why George created ILM, to be able to do amazing effects with the fairly low budget they had.
