Kevlar is a strong, lightweight synthetic fiber known for its exceptional toughness and resistance to heat, cuts, and abrasion. It's a type of aramid fiber (aromatic polyamide) and was developed by Stephanie Kwolek at DuPont in 1965.

Key Properties of Kevlar:

High tensile strength: About 5 times stronger than steel by weight

Heat resistance: Doesn't melt; decomposition starts around 450°C (842°F)

Lightweight: Much lighter than steel or fiberglass

Chemical resistance: Good resistance to many solvents and chemicals

Durability: Excellent resistance to wear and fatigue
