I'm a heavy user and the M1 8gb was my main computer for 4 years. These days, it's my secondary but I still use it when I don't want to bring my main M4 16gb 15". My m1 8gb hit the swap super heavy. I didn't feel a performance drop, but was worried at the amount of SSD wear it would do. 5 years later, my ssd still has 78% life remaining accord to the SMART data.
This M1 8gb won't be good for AI or heavy workloads, but is more than enough power for the average internet based user. At this price point, they only have premium chromebooks or crappy Windows laptops. I'd take my M1 8gb over any other if this was my price cap or giving it to a basic user.

If you can afford the difference, this sells for $599 brand new at Walmart: https://www.walmart.com/ip/Apple-.../715596133

Not everyone has $850 to drop. Some people have a hard cap of $400 or $500, which would have kept them out of the MacBook market until today.

CPU is fine, but 8GB should be a deal breaker for most people in 2025

8gb of ram is the real detriment on this. It's 2025 -- 32gb is considered the bare minimum standard anymore. Such a paltry 8gb amount was the low end back in....what, 2013?

With casual admin use (email, discord, onenote, firefox), I'm hitting 65-70% on a 16gb M1 Air. You'll be slamming the swap memory -- or having to treat it like a mobile by single tasking. Just with that stuff alone, I'm occasionally hitting that swap memory like it owes me money.

You're better off looking at the entry-level M4 Air which routinely hits $850. Yes, it's more than twice the price -- but you're getting a CPU that is significantly better AND twice the ram (just in the base config). For $1000, you can get that same config in a 15" chassis. All with the option to get a spanking fresh 3-year warranty.
Don't let this guys exaggerated post sway you. I just traded in my M1 8/256 for an M4 16/256 and for general use, you will barely notice a difference. I liked the form factor of the M1 so I kinda regret selling it.

33gb bare minimum standard??? Hello??? Not even close. Apple has consistently good memory management and this device is still stellar for most. Especially those who can't afford a Mac over twice the price… like you mentioned…

yes that too, not upgradable so the apple silly con is e waste, before when it was a real laptop u could replace the ssd and ram, but now its a phonetop so everything is soldered, its too bad bc mac used to be the best computer, now its not even a computer just a phonetop
Intel shill? The fact we're even talking about people buying a 5 year old laptop is testimony to how good Apple Silicon is compared to competition

lol that's crazy. I run this model (8gb ram) for work and have zero problems running Outlook, Teams / video calls, Edge browser, and every office application running at the same time.

very good price for the phonetop, they used to have intel but now it has a phone chip so its not a real computer anymore, but at this price its good, i think i will buy it

You're so off this has M1. Apple silicon clobbers intel since the m1 in the efficiency/power. They dropped intel because it is crap. I have both, an intel 13 th gen laptop with a 4080 gpu and a m4 MacBook Pro. The wintel is better for gaming otherwise it's just a heavy toy that does as soon as I plugged from the wall. Learn a bit before you say such uniformed bs

we'll decide for ourselves what the "bare minimum" is. is this to be understood?

This should be considered end-of-life. Apple does not guarantee updates. Even Chromebooks get 10 years. It was outdated at launch with 8gb.
you don't have to update. I still run mojave on an older macbook pro. Or you can throw ubuntu arm on it
