I'm a heavy user and the M1 8gb was my main computer for 4 years. These days, it's my secondary but I still use it when I don't want to bring my main M4 16gb 15". My m1 8gb hit the swap super heavy. I didn't feel a performance drop, but was worried at the amount of SSD wear it would do. 5 years later, my ssd still has 78% life remaining accord to the SMART data.
This M1 8gb won't be good for AI or heavy workloads, but is more than enough power for the average internet based user. At this price point, they only have premium chromebooks or crappy Windows laptops. I'd take my M1 8gb over any other if this was my price cap or giving it to a basic user.

If you can afford the difference, this sells for $599 brand new at Walmart: https://www.walmart.com/ip/Apple-.../715596133

Not everyone has $850 to drop. Some people have a hard cap of $400 or $500, which would have kept them out of the MacBook market until today.

That's....not how ram works, but hey, keep mansplaining things!
Actually... You're wrong. That's exactly how RAM works. The OS maximizes the amount of RAM it has in order to improve the user experience through additional caching and buffering. Not to mention, macOS has a lot of tricks like memory compression to reduce the memory pressure on lower-RAM devices.
For a lot of people 8GB will not be enough but this model is objectively better than any Chromebook and will perform very well for text editing, web browsing and streaming.

8GB isn't optimal but it's perfectly fine for what this is.

Surprised this is so highly upvoted, when ebay has these at similar or cheaper pricing for the same condition

I've had this M1 laptop for 4 years with no issues. It's my daily driver at home for browsing and watching YouTube. I don't play games or use it with a monitor. So far, it's been great — I'm not planning to upgrade until it dies or the battery dies.

This should be considered end-of-life. Apple does not guarantee updates. Even Chromebooks get 10 years. It was outdated at launch with 8gb.
Telling others to consider it EOL is terrible advice and a look at the latest macOS (Sequoia) version's list of supported devices shows how wrong it is. Sure, Apple doesn't guarantee updates but Sequoia still supports Intel devices from 2017 (iMac Pro) and 2018 (Mac Mini).

And this is an M-series chip which gives Apple more incentive to continue supporting it long term because it's their own chip.

If you want your points to be taken seriously, try writing them with coherent punctuation instead of this mess of a run-on sentence.

Oh, because people haven't figured out how to boot non-native OS's on Apple hardware before they started making their desktop chips in house, right? Because even Microsoft is making an attempt to shift to ARM64 architecture as well so Apple being ahead of the curb is dumb, yeah? The number of people commenting on this that either a) don't have even a basic, common sense understanding of computer science and/or b) assume everyone has the same or greater workload as them is wild to say "8 GiGs Is NoT eNoUgH tO bRoWsE tHe InTeRnEt. MuSt Be E-wAsTe." is astounding.

I'm a life long Windows and Linux user, so I'm not shilling when I say even I know pound for pound, performance per watt pretty much nothing comes close to Apple Silicon.

Linux is irrelevant for 99.99 percent of consumers and only extreme niche market software usage. AMD lags just as much as intel in the efficiency realm. I'm sorry you're so disgruntled. I last installed Linux 30 years ago. It is just as irrelevant now as then for me and 99.99 percent of people.

Don't let this guys exaggerated post sway you. I just traded in my M1 8/256 for an M4 16/256 and for general use, you will barely notice a difference. I liked the form factor of the M1 so I kinda regret selling it.
If you don't do much with your stuff, of course you won't see a difference.

Intel shill? The fact we're even talking about people buying a 5 year old laptop is testimony to how good Apple Silicon is compared to competition
Thats apple the brand, not the silicon. People would still talk about buying a 5 year old MB, if they stayed on Intel as well.

oh ok so just ignore the fact that u could play windows games on a mac just a few years ago and now you have to buy a separate computer and carry that around with you but the linux part of what i wrote was more interesting got it.
