I'm trying to decide between an FHD or QHD display for my high school kid's next laptop.

I'm almost set on a system with an RTX 4070, as it offers good value right now. Either an i9 or Ryzen 9 is fine with me, both are plenty powerful.

His usage is 80% school work and 20% gaming. He mainly plays Drone Racing League (DRL) Simulator and Minecraft, nothing else at the moment. That could change in the next couple of years, but for now, his needs are modest, and he doesn't require a top-tier GPU or ultra-high-end display.

My primary concern is heat. Given his light gaming use, I don't want him stuck with a laptop that runs hot unnecessarily. That's why I'm leaning toward FHD over QHD, thinking it may help with cooler operation and better battery life.

Would appreciate any insights from those with experience.
Thanks!

I think the big benefit with most of the QHD displays in this class is the 500 nits of brightness. That helps a lot in bright rooms or outdoors. Most of the FHD panels I've seen only run 300 nits, and with less vibrant colors. You always have the option with a QHD display to lower the resolution to FHD as well.
