Until it doesn't - then you have an overcooked roast and 8 disappointed friends.

I used to use cheaper meat thermometers, but the investment in a nicer one was well worth it for me.

I ordered this about a week ago for the same price.
I've only used it once, but it seems to work fine and definitely worth $4!
It also came with a second battery; one was already inside and a second was in a bag.
I thought that was a nice touch.
It uses the small round batteries so replacing the battery probably costs about the same as buying a new one assuming they keep doing this deal.

I just want one that is actually instant. 4 seconds is a long time, especially over a grill.

I do.
Like I said I've only used it once when we grilled some steaks the other night, but for $4 I think it's a pretty good deal.

It's pretty good, matched the temps of my thermoworks and Taylor within less than a degree. It's slow compared to higher end thermometers, but 4 seconds was considered a fast read years ago. I bought one as a backup/BBQ sensor and I'm content with it.
