I hate this toy so much. You're extremely limited in the permutations of how you place the dowels because the holes on the balls have very strict angle measurements and you risk (and outright probably will) break the tabs in the end of the dowels trying some designs out. I got the set from Lakeshore, and my kid destroyed the ends of two of them within ten minutes.

A 5 year old isn't going to do geometry formulas to find interior angle measurements for doing an igloo and then measure the precise hole on each ball to use.

My 3 year old loves this. He isn't tall enough to make big forts yet, but he has fun connecting the pieces in lots of different ways. Good for problem solving and patience. If they have patience for a puzzle, then they can do this. It's not as complicated as some make it sound. I like how solid this type is so kids can throw blankets and stuff over it to make cool forts.
