FYI M1 MacBook Airs with 16gb are $300-400. Add $5 in thermal pads and they run the same speed as a Pro.

I think that's good. But how is the refurb? Are they good?

What's wrong with that? Not everyone needs 64 GB memory and over 512 GB storage

Nothing necessarily "wrong" with that. It just makes it a less hot deal. Also, I could argue that people who benefit from a Max chip are definitely the people who would need >32GB RAM and >512GB SSD

This could be said for any computer deal. Also, anyone using a Max chip is probably using external storage via Thunderbolt. RAM, fair enough.

I am a software engineer at a large fintech company. Running multiple containers, Android emulators and IDEs, 32 GB and 512 GB are plenty. I can see engineers working with ML needs more.

For those with limited usage needs (say, parents or grandparents), the "2021 Apple 24" iMac M1 (Pink only, 16GB ram, 1TB SSD )" for $670 is a pretty solid deal.

You get an amazing display that's far better than it has any right to be at this price point. You're getting excellent speakers + microphone. And unlike many other desktops, it comes with a rather nice quality keyboard + mouse + webcam. Ok, the mouse is actually awful, but I digress.

With 16gb/1tb, that's a combo that'll be more than enough for most lightweight users (although one could easily argue that 32gb has been the bare minimum standard since 2015). For a used machine like this, it's about current utility...not longevity. So I'll give the 16gb a free pass here. It's adequate for today.

I actually despise the concept of iMacs. A perfectly good top tier monitor + webcam + speakers that's going to waste when the machine's life is over. These are things which can EASILY be reused for many years on any other machine, if kept separate. But with Apple? Nope, not allowed.

Then again, one could argue the same about the high-end displays in laptops. It'd only take a few extra dollars to allow another computer to use that display as an output. But it would destroy the market, so no one dares attempt it. Gotta encourage replacing the entire package every 3-5 years, or else double-digit quarter-over-quarter growth isn't possible.

And Woot's used/refurb? It's a beat up garage sale find, with barely a spit shine....possibly with more spit than shine. I've had stuff "officially" Amazon refurbished of Amazon products (kindle oasis and echo gen 1) that was beat up to snot & dead on arrival. And remember, they charge shipping if you're not a Amazon subscriber.

All of that aside, whoever gets this machine will be getting a premium experience for however long the machine lasts.

Are you high? I'm a professional SWE and I use an M1 Pro 16" with 16GB and it's great. $1039 for double the RAM is an insane deal.

I have a 2021 M1 Pro 14" that I use daily for work. It's down to around 85% battery life and lasts about 5 hours on just battery.
