Had mine for about two years. No leaks. Works great, very cheap to run. I wonder if the people with leaks have a problem with the installation rather than the product itself.

Same, I'm not sure if it's the same model, but I got a Rheem from Home Depot like 2 years again and had a plumber install it. Started leaking after a year.

Didn't expect this thing thing to be an air-based heat pump, thought it would have a waste-water stream to pull heat out of. So I guess it cools your house air, a plus in the summer but negative in the winter.

I have this living in PA and the water struggled to stay hot when outside temps were in the 30's

Unless you have in heat pump only mode, the electric elements should have kicked in when unable to make temp

Yes that makes sense since it's supposed to operate above a minimum of 40° for maximum efficiency. In the 30s it should struggle and your best bet is to put it back into electric mode instead of heat pump. Best of both worlds!

I have the proterra series (only thru plumber), works great I keep it on heat pump mode all year long in New England since it's just me. Also cools my garage in the summer. After fed tax credit and local utility rebate, final cost was maybe $600 installed

For all the owners with leaks. If you are on well water or city water and have a softner you should replace the factory sacrificial anode with a magnesium anode. AI searchMagnesium Anode Rod: Advantages and DisadvantagesAdvantages: • Superior corrosion protection: Magnesium is more reactive, so it more aggressively draws corrosive ions, shielding the tank better. • Better water quality: Reduces metallic tastes and odors in water. Makes water taste "fresh" compared to aluminum rods. • No health risk: Magnesium is non-toxic, whereas aluminum's safety in water heaters is sometimes debated.

You are thinking way way way out of the box. Yes, you are correct on the rest.

Excellent points. These are fairly tall water heaters, so I assume they can accomidate a longer a taller one.

Compared your outside temps to ours in IN and extremely similar. Either something wrong with your unit or you have a very large hot water consuming household, or the mode you have it set at. As someone mentioned you need to adjust it depending on the season. I run mine in Heat pump only April through November then switch to "Energy saving" which is a hybrid mode through the winter months.

FYI. Trust your instinct on what size you need. Others complain about running out of hot water, but our 2 adults and 2 elementary kids are just fine with 40 gallon tank set at 120 degrees. - On Heat pump only mode. Granted we survived on a dying gas water heater for a couple years, so anything may feel like a step up to us. (Spouse does take fairly hot showers and has no issues.) - But that's our experience. If you think you need a bigger tank, then you probably do.
Our tank is in a finished basement . A primary consideration was dehumidification benefits for the basement. Secondary consideration was possibility of going all electric if we ever replace the gas furnace. It doesn't run enough in the summmer to get substantial dehumidification. I'm not sure if I would do again since gas is so cheap here, but so far everything has been okay.
