For personal consumption? That's a lot of peanut butter that you have to eat quickly!

[HISTORY LESSON TIME!]
Everytime peanut butter appears, you'll have people claiming that it's not "real" peanut butter if it has sugar. And they say the same if it has stabilizers like palm oil or hydrogenated oils. Here are the facts:

Real authentic peanut butter has sugar. It has had sugar since peanut butter was created in the 19th century and certainly when it was patented in 1885. That's because it was considered a confection. Here is Edson's 1885 patent. All authorities cite his patent as the invention of modern peanut butter. Sugar is mentioned repeatedly.

As such, it is sugarless peanut butter that's not "real" or authentic. Indeed, sugarless peanut butter only became a thing in the 80s, when diabetes was increasing and people showed more interest in diet and exercise. The desire to avoid sugar is also why the 80's saw a flurry of new sugar substitutes.

People who claim that sugary peanut butter is fake are confusing it with peanut paste. The latter is pure ground peanuts, sometimes with salt. It's used in Asian and African cooking.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peanut_paste

Here you go: Peanut paste made only with grounded peanuts and no additives. They subtitled it "peanut butter" for confused Americans. See that layer of oil on top? That leads us to the next lesson...

...As for hydrogenated oils, that's been in peanut butter since the 1920s. People simply didn't want to stir their peanut butter for 30 secs everytime they used it. And it was in virtually all commercial peanut butters until the last few decades, when trans fats were deemed harmful. After all, why would they remove something for no reason that consumers found convenient since the 1920s? Of note, current hydrogenation methods produce no more trans fats than what's naturally in beef. That's why peanut butter with hydrogenated oils can now say "0 grams trans fat." Palm oil is a natural alternative to hydrogenated oil because it's one of the few vegetable oils that's solid at room temperature.

In summary: Real authentic peanut butter had sugar. Sugarless peanut butter is an inauthentic relatively recent invention. And one can even argue that old fashion peanut butter has both sugar and hydrogenated oils. Those who want just grounded peanuts with no additives are actually describing peanut paste. Finally, adding natural ingredients -- sugar and palm oil -- doesn't make it any less natural. Indeed, peanut butter is, by definition, unnatural since it doesn't exist in nature.

FYI, Serious Eats did a taste test of creamy peanut butters. The testers were all professional chefs. #1 is some obscure premium brand, Woodstock. #2 is Jif and Skippy landed at #4. There appears to be no correlation between the rankings and whether the brand has sugar and/or hydrogenated oils. So people who claim that good peanut butter shouldn't have sugar or stabilizers are incorrect.

The rankings:
#1: Woodstock Organic 'Smooth & Salted' Peanut Butter: 4/5
#2: Jif Creamy Peanut Butter: 3.92/5
#3: Peanut Butter & Co. Smooth Operator: 3.67/5
#4: Skippy Creamy Peanut Butter: 3.65/5
#5: Once Again Creamy Peanut Butter: 3.41/5
#6: Teddie All-Natural Smooth Peanut Butter: 3.41/5
#7: 365 Unsweetened Creamy Peanut Butter: 2.6/5
#8: 365 Unsweetened and Unsalted Creamy Peanut Butter: 2.41/5
#9: Nature's Promise Creamy Peanut Butter: 2.3/5
#10: Smucker's All-Natural Peanut Butter: 2/5

Walmart's brand is cheaper and the ingredients are identical. $3.98 for 40oz. And there's no need to subscribe.

I guess you're lucky enough to have a Walmart nearby or you drive. We unfortunate Manhattanites have to rely on the Shipping price, which is often higher than the In Store price. Lucky you!
