Power consumption is heavy at idle, and it's wildly overpowered for most HomeAssistant workloads. Here in California, the energy difference between this and an RK3588 based system (which can cool passively) is significant--somewhere between 5 and 15 W.
RK3588 systems (like Radxa Rock 5b, various NanoPi boards, OrangePi boards...) idle around 6W and max out at <10W. An N95 system will idle at around 10-15W and will easily hit 30 W under load.
5W x 24 hr x 365 days x 55¢/kWhr = $25
15W x 24 hr x 365 days x 55¢/kWhr = $72
Your numbers may vary, but food for thought (and why I still haven't added an N95 system to our home)

Assuming they don't want to do any gaming, it's not a bad starting point for the price.

However, depending on their age, you may not want to start them on Windows and opt for Chrome OS instead.

Despite being more secure than it was when I was growing up, it's still far too easy to get into trouble with an internet connected Windows PC. And while you can enable parental controls, there's still ways around them. There isn't a single kid who hasn't gone looking for ways to break the child lock.

At least with Chrome OS, you won't have to worry about malware.

Anyone know what type of interface the m.2 drive is on? It seems like exactly the type of Home Assistant OS box I've been waiting for. VGA output is handy.

Depends on your transcode needs. Looks like a no for 4k but just fine for 1080p transcoding single stream. If you are just serving up raw files it will handle that just fine.

It says m.2 SATA on the images.

For the price, tempted to pick this up to replace a Raspberri Pi 4 to host Channels DVR server. Anyone know if that is an actual move up? Been looking at n150 based options before this deal came up.

Odd, the two-year protection plan is more expensive than two-year plans on better models. Is it because it's a more sketchy seller?

I doubt you would be able to tell the difference between a N95/N97/N100/N150 for a ChannelsDVR server. I have this exact configuration except DDR5. I paid $60 on Amazon nearly 2 years ago. For ChannelsDVR, I use a slower, J4125, and it works great. I put Windows 11+Kodi on my N95 Mini PC and use it as a client rather than a server.

Does anyone know if real world performance is significantly better than RK3588 as in the Raspberry Pi 5B / Orange Pi 5 / NanoPi R6S?
Benchmark numbers are equivalent to mixed and I'm seeing the RK3588 actually has better hardware support for video encoding and inference workloads (e.g. in Frigate).

So tempting but I think this is a pass for me.

From what I've read, it can definitely handle certain 4K workloads. If you're trying to transcode 120 Mbit 4K to lower bitrate 4K, it may choke. But if you're transcoding 4K down to 1080p, it probably can handle two or three streams assuming you don't need a crazy high bitrate output.

Hilarious how this got upvoted because a staff member posted this, despite a better deal being available for days: https://slickdeals.net/f/18477373-acemagician-vista-v1-mini-pc-n95-16gb-ddr4-512gb-ssd-more-119
