What if you're over the 2GB limit of the basic plan. Will they still keep my files to do this?

Yes. I just did it yesterday and had >500 GB of files. Dropbox says on their site that they won't delete files for being over your plan limit. It will just stop syncing until you subscribe for the new plan.

Playing around with cancelling to take advantage of this deal and I get:

"Your account is 33.78 GB over the 5.5 GB free limit. We'll notify you before deleting your files to bring your account within the storage limit. You'll lose these features:"

So... wait until the night before your renewal date, downgrade, cross your fingers they don't delete your files, and upgrade the next day once your renewal date has passed?

Also, there is a current Chase 30% back offer on multiple of my Chase cards:

Offer details
Earn 30% cashback, up to $30 as a statement credit when you spend at Dropbox, including taxes and after any discounts. Please note that this offer is for a subscription purchase.

Anyone try a double dip?

Becoming the data point that I want to see. Cancelled my plan yesterday, the day before the annual renewal billing. It wasn't until the evening today that they warned me about needing to delete files or upgrade. Went through link above. (Thank you.) Paid for 1 year of Plus at $71.93 with my Chase Ink card that had an activated 30% back on Dropbox offer attached. Should get $21.58 back, bringing the annual cost down to $50.35 - Nice savings vs. letting it just renew at $119.88

Thanks OP.

Thank you. Just clarification on timeline.
My dropbox plus says it will renew on Feb 28th.
I plan to cancel back to basic on Feb 27th.
Do I then purchase on the 28th? or Wait until March 1?
Also, I have the Dropbox offer added to my chase ink card as well. It also says it expires on 2/28, but in the terms it says I need to make first payment by 3/30. Should that still be okay for the additional 30% from chase?
Thank you for the clarification on timeline.
