It was less the socialist policies than the rise of authoritatian populism. Tell the people what they want to hear while consolidating power in the central government. Attack dissent in all levels of government and civil society. Launch unilateral economic policies opposed by all major economists. Isolate the nation on the global stage. Control trade and micro-manage free enterprise. That sort of thing.
As someone who came from a previous communist country, Poland, I'm going to say the socialist/communist policies had plenty to do with it. In conjunction with the authoritarian rulers that socialist/communist policies always bring since that the only way those policies can be enforced.
North Korea & Cuba are poor, because they are extensively sanctioned by the US empire, & they are constantly threatened & undermined by the US empire. Saudi Arabia is rich, because even though it is ruled by Islamic extremists it uses its vast reserves of oil & gas to support the US empire's petrodollar as the world reserve currency, thus it is allowed to enjoy lots of international trade. Israel is successful because it receives lots of aid from the US empire & its sidekicks in Europe, Canada, Australia, & elsewhere. Etc.Another example out of many: The US empire & its European allies ruined Gaddafi's government in Libya, even though Gaddafi's government made Libya the most prosperous nation in all of Africa. However, Gaddafi was too independent-minded regarding politics, economics, Israel, & so forth, thus the US empire & its European allies assisted terrorists or freedom fighters to assassinate Gaddafi's government. Then Libya has been a failed state. This book is filled with US propaganda about politics, economics, ethnic pros vs cons (lack of these politically incorrect facts), etc.
Well, that's one opinion.

Doesn't matter what type of government someone has. What difference does that make when central banks and their cronies rule as unelected officials around the world. You heard the term, follow the money? If you follow the money it leads to one place.

It's like the world's greatest engagement experts from around the globe gathered in a secret laboratory under the 50yd line of San Jose State to design this thread to entice hot takes.
The way the world operates is on ignorance and double ignorance. Or not knowing and thinking we know when we do not. The answer is not by focusing outwardly on the problems but inwardly, as in for each of us to see our strength from within. And stop pinning the judgment on others except in using that judgment to reflect ourselves, make internal change, behave in ways that can inspire others to do the same. Reality is, for the West, we live very outwardly based on what we think about others and by giving objects intrinsic value. We must first treat everything without value, and give value to only positive human tendencies (in plain, simple terms how to be good, not twist the definition). For non-west world, they are not different. Same problem. They just aren't well positioned in the materialism. A world based on "outwardness" will always have "time out" to think it over. One where "inwardness" is the guiding principle is the better way to go and for each individual to reassess themselves, even if you believe your opinion to be about others it's more about you and your reaction to an action that was at some point you. It might change your thoughts if you understand that whatever you do onto others, you will reverse roles with the other in another contextual form. If your ability to see it is sharp enough, you break that cycle by reception to that, in other words fine-tune one's awareness. Remove the ignorance.

Perhaps we can start here:
"Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility regard others as better than yourselves. Let each of you look not to your own interests, but to the interests of others."
