My dear late mother tried to get me to read this book for many years and I never did! I think it time to see what the dark side is about and how I will be able to do it again soon enough for my children!

Probably my deepest regret in life is that I wasted my childhood and young adulthood on my extremely religious upbringing, including precociously prolific study of scripture and consuming vapid religious novels (see: "Left Behind" series) and films. Why would a rueful atheism-adjacent exvangelical bother airing such personal dirty laundry? Because although The Screwtape Letters was very much part of that evangelical regimen, it's one of an extremely scant few religion-oriented books that I have no regrets in having read. Its commendably clever and wry composition transcends spiritualism to the extent that it has influenced my consumption of literature throughout the 30 years since I first read it. As much as I disagree with its author's premises, I recommend reading it, especially if you enjoy satire and don't mind bringing a critical eye to your book reading chair. Off the top of my head, I can't think of a single more worthwhile specimen of intentional fiction among the many religious works I read in my youth. Even if you found The Chronicles of Narnia childish and dull, give this short work a try.
tl;dr: would recommend, regardless of your spiritual persuasion

Thank you very much for that as it seems that we are all in camps at times. My regret is I wasted many years when young and even well into what should have been an adulthood with a terribly nihilistic and hedonistic attitude and kind of underlying hate or disgust for humanity and the world in general.

I am still paying a price for that and am still a mess but coming from that perspective I to found this one of the best books I have ever read. He must doing something right if he has the both loving the book. Even for the anti or irreligious it can be a great book. He definitely understands human nature and it is a great and classic read.
