i have been following 8th NVME prices for a while. It's a pretty good deal. Of course, you can get 2 4TB for a little less, but you also need to think about how expensive your ports are.

Is this really a deal? Seems like this should be closer to 400 than 500.

Why would you think close to $400 is even a realistic price for an 8TB version of one of the best gen 4 drives on the market? Just search for previous 8TB SN850X deals on this site. $500 each would be a very good deal. There's almost always a $/TB penalty for the largest capacities of any storage offering.

I'd say not worth it. If you diversify your storage types there's no real reason to get an NVME this big, kind of a waste of money.

I agree. I have a NAS + PC with 2 4tb 990 pros that I bought for 220 and 170. I can't see any non-work reason where you would want an 8tb drive when motherboards have 2-4 m2 slots.

Hope this helps folks decide whether to bite now, or hold. This is a quantity discount plus a new email subscriber discount stacked on the SanDisk site.

The problem with those motherboards, they might have 4 NVME ports, but not enough PCIe lanes to support them, plus a graphics card. Manufacturers themselves will say you're not supposed to use all ports at the same time, at least ASUS told me. So, kind of messed up, but out of 4 ports on my SUS.. I mean ASUS board, I can only use 2, or I start getting BSOD like crazy. And there were other users reporting the same issue. Experienced this with two boards after first one was replaced under warranty, so I just got a larger second NVME drive and never had an issue since.

Exactly. Not every file needs to be on an NVME. I keep Windows and other apps that require high speeds on a 1TB NVME, Games on another 4TB NVME, and other non-essential files (mainly non-important apps, media, general files, etc). That way everything is spread out and you save money instead of waiting for the day this 8TB NVME drive dies and you lose all your data in one basket.

No one should ever have a drive that can't be fully backed up to another drive, unless you don't care about the data. That's kind of fundamental IMO...

I'd love to have 8tb in a laptop, but that's just because I'm lazy and would rather find some stuff quickly as opposed to digging through huge 20TB drives.... nod

Pretty hard to "diversify your storage types" on a modern laptop. And laptops outsell desktops by a good margin. Your post adds zero value. The question is whether or not this is a good price for an 8TB SN850X. Not whether or not you've personally come up with a good reason for owning any 8TB NVMe drive.

From what I read a while back, that just means that's all they've tested

AFAIK there aren't any single sided 8TB NVMe drives. I can imagine some docking stations with internal NVMe slots only supporting single sided drives due to physical space constraints, similar to the same restriction on many thin & light ultrabook type laptops.

Because it was already under $500 in the past, and with all technology I would expect it to get cheaper rather than more expensive.

Additionally, if the 4TB nvme drives can get close to $50/TB (maybe not this particular one) , then I would also expect the 8TB to get close to 50/TB, which would be about $400.
