Looks like a heck of a deal to me, it even has Shimano Deore instead of crappy SRAM SX/NX.

I am not a bike expert or regular. Thinking of getting into biking after a long gap. Is it overkill to use it on a flat surface? If so, are there any good recommendations?

How does this compare to the Cannondale Habit 4? Would this be an upgrade for me?

yeah. this is too much for what you need. most probably XC or a gravel is better option for you.

Great deal. If you're at all wanting a full suspension mtb this is an instant pick imo. Heavier than a hardtail would be at this price by ~8 lbs if that matters to you but more versatile for a given skill level. I'm planning on selling my current mtb but still considering this lol

don't get MTB for flat surface. heavy weight and low gears plus not nimble and fast. get a gravel or flat-bar gravel or road bike. much lightweight and fast/nimble, low rolling resistance tires too.

This deal is slick though for MTB beginners.

This is a no brainer. Crazy deal. You will not find a bike with these specs at this price. Canyon had a price mistake about a year ago for this same bike for 799 and the site crashed. Great find and repped

Managed to snag a medium. I'm 5'10 with 32" inseam, hope their calculator is spot on.

I couldn't find a used spectral near me anywhere near the price of this new one, so no matter what no regrets. I'm a beginner mountain biker in CO, this will be more than good enough for me to get better on this year. Next year I'll get the nice bike I was planning on getting this year, gotta earn it first!

You shouldn't really need a new bike certainly not in a year anyway. This is worthy of doing some upgrading too down the road. Really the suspension bits are the only meh things on it, wheels too but they always are unless you spend $$$$$$$$$$$$$$. Still the suspension bits are better than most bikes even hardtails you will run into for $1k. You can usually find year or two old new stock forks and shocks on Jenson for cheap that would be a big upgrade when the current ones start holding you back.
