Worked for me. I've got one, but for less than 3 bucks, grabbed another one. The only thing I've ever used it for is to check if an outlet is hot. A couple years ago, for insurance purposes, I had to pull every outlet and light switch in my house and retrofit the wire-nut connections with Alumacon Connectors. This thing came in handy along with a two part circuit tester that you plug in the outlet and then run down the breaker box until it beeps. Where it beeps is your breaker for that outlet. Still you want to verify it's off with this probe.

Sounds like someone has aluminum branch wiring. I know it was probably a lot of work, but this is one of those cases where the insurance company was right.
Keep your receipts for when you sell your house. Otherwise the next buyer may want to have someone open every junction box to confirm the change was done.
