Rule of thumb - back sleepers need a pillow to support your neck and keep your head facing straight up at the ceiling when you lay down. Stomach sleepers need a flat pillow that doesn't push your neck back. You want your head to lay flat on your pillow with your back straight while on your stomach. Side sleepers usually need a taller pillow, so when you lay on your shoulder in-bed your neck should be perpendicular with your shoulders while on your side.

Rule of thumb - back sleepers need a pillow to support your neck and keep your head facing straight up at the ceiling when you lay down. Stomach sleepers need a flat pillow that doesn't push your neck back. You want your head to lay flat on your pillow with your back straight while on your stomach. Side sleepers usually need a taller pillow, so when you lay on your shoulder in-bed your neck should be perpendicular with your shoulders while on your side.
Pillows are such an individual choice - and if it doesn't work out for everyday sleeping this might be OK as a guest room pillow or as a backrest for $8 - at least it's not a major investment like some other pillows.
