Fly into SFO. Typically best to come in a day early or so. Explore said city then fly out. Same day will need to leave time to collect bag and recheck/security since not likely flying in on same carrier.

Really? I thought it was very good price with 2 free check-in bags. But I like to have some decent amount of time at layover airports since I like to explore airports and also just in case, the previous flight is delayed.

There's a suica card built into Apple wallet, it's literally tap n go, top up within your Apple wallet, no additional app needed
Whoa. I didn't know that was a thing! Even better!!

Yep - we spent 4 days in Tokyo and 5 in Sapporo with a day trip to the national park. It was around 10 deg cooler in Sapporo and less humid. Loved the experience, would not go back at the end of July / August again. One thing we learned was you need to get an app called Suica Mobile for your phone. Apple Pay doesn't work at most of the subway stops or vending machines, but installing the Suica Mobile app acts like a local Apple Pay you top off. Anywhere that has an IC card logo you can then use.
I am guessing the app is only available in Japan? I don't see it on Google US.

Even mid June it can get hot. Secret tip - go to Northern Japan like Hokkaido if you like it a little cooler.
Don't worry this price is only for the winter

Tried booking from SEA to NRT and the flight was $330. The flight from SFO was $270 with the layover in SEA. Any idea what to do with this? I live in Seattle, do I just book the SFO flight, stay in Seattle and just catch the layover flight at noon?
Theywon't let you jump in on the layover.

Sitting in SEA right now coming back from Tokyo. They grouped my wife and I together on the window/aisle both to and from (A330 so 2-4-2). My only complaint is that Alaska and Hawaiian aren't integrated so I wasn't able to check in and get boarding passes online either direction. Oh, and the IFE screens in on the planes are extremely dim and unresponsive. Otherwise the flight was uneventful
on a 2-4-2 plane I'd probably take my chances on getting a fare and giving up seat selection, I figured this was the usual 3-3-3 and for the SEA-NRT leg I KNOW I'd get a middle seat, I have that kind of life...

What time of the year do you recommend? I've always wanted to check it out.
Sep-Nov is best and you get to see the fall colors. Mar-May is good for cherry blossoms but it's the most popular time. For this deal, I'd go Feb-March when it cold but not freezing and the crowds aren't too bad.

Go to your Apple wallet and it's under Transit > Japan. You can choose Suica, Pasmo, or Icoco… pretty much can use any of them in most of Japan.

Only works on iPhone. Non-Japanese Androids don't support the NFC standard used by Japan's IC card system.

Nothing you can do except to fly to SFO first. Gotta take the first leg. If you don't, the whole ticket gets canceled.

It's strange that a country with so many visitors won't make this standard for non-Japanese android phones.

Agree with seeing the cherry blossoms, although February might be a little early. I was in Japan for work in March 2023 and saw cherry blossoms in Tokyo, Yokohama, and Fukuoka. If you want later cherry blossoms, you head north. Earlier, you head south, but Fukuoka is already fairly south, so there's not much mainland left after that. Of course, this particular deal is only good for December to March, so you take what you can get.

I was in Nagasaki in January this year and while it was chilly, it wasn't unreasonably cold. Sapporo, on the other hand, would have been bone freezing cold, although I would still like to see the ice sculptures one day.

Do NOT go in June through September. Hot as hell. This year, the National Weather Agency is forecasting even a summer-like October. The Japanese heat is miserable. I know it because I have had the misfortune of going through the last several summers here, including right now.

A dark horse is January (after the holidays) and February. The airfare tends to be cheaper, the crowd is smaller, and the air is dry and crisp. A little chilly depending on where you go, but that is so much better than the God-awful heat.
