You do not have to work hard to find scenarios where 8 GB suffers from poor performance at 1080p in newer games. Not just 4K or 1440p, but 1080p. Since we have multiple cards that are virtually identical except for the memory capacity, it's very easy to test and see huge drops in average framerates and 1% lows. This will certainly get worse in the coming years. The next generation could see Nvidia, AMD, and Intel all putting 12 GB GDDR7 on 128-bit cards, providing a cheaper alternative to 16 GB clamshell 128-bit cards, but enough VRAM for 1080p.
You are definitely getting hosed when a fundamentally powerful card like the 9060 XT, 5060 Ti, 3070, etc. gets 8 GB, since the additional VRAM can instantly make 1440p/4K viable in some games. Because to get to that "Ferrari" level, costs the manufacturer maybe an additional $20-30. Certainly a lot less than the crazy gap seen here ($224 8 GB vs. ~$370 16 GB). So the guy praying for a $275 9060 XT 16GB is onto something, although that isn't happening anytime soon.
Obviously, 8 GB can still be fine for many people, and that includes playing new games, not just old ones. You can tinker with settings, lower texture quality, and make it work better. This is a good price for a fast 8 GB card, and currently the cheapest way on the planet to get access to FSR4.
