How does that affect Costco's excellent return policy when the membership you bought something under is now cancelled?
It's tempting to cancel and start over BUT I want my expensive electronics, furniture, tires etc to continue to have what is essentially a protection plan pseudo warranty. I'm not going to return a cheap chair a year later, but if for example an expensive recliner stops working at 4 months I absolutely would bring it back.

And is it worth$45 a year?
If you buy something today and your membership expires tomorrow, it certainly won't be "more than a year later" until your membership expires..
That said, even with an expired membership, it seems unlikely that Costco would jerk you around if you had a justified return like an unprompted product failure.
