I downloaded the app to try and find the answer to this question, too, and it seems like yes, yes, it probably does require a stupid shitty subscription

I bought the same unit few months back. The videos turn out to be not too bad. got few videos here youtube.com/@BirdCamNature. I didn't have to pay any subscriptions, most recorded and stored on the SD card.

"The VicoHome that is used to monitor any movement in front of the camera also has one month of free trail then only 4.99/month. So glad with the whole experience !"

Did you get the solar option? If yes, does it charge by solar enough that you never have to charge yourself?

Most bird feeder cameras are a scam, they require expensive monthly plans to view live footage. "AI bird detection" scammy language. My plan is to get a cheap camera with free live filming (I have lots of these [amazon.com], they're sometimes $10) and stick it in a bird feeder. OR a solar version for ~$30. Haven't done it yet but I don't really see why it wouldn't work.

I bought one last year and it didn't last 3 months. Great idea but the plastic became so brittle from the Florida sun, the camera stopped functioning and wouldn't record. support was non existent.
I bought one for my mother and she said it's working. I wouldn't believe my mother. She's probably paying some subscription and an offshore scammer is sending her pictures of birds.

I have a different smart bird feeder that uses the VicoHome app. You can record to SD without a subscription. You can't use the AI bird detection or setup smart notifications. The smart notification thing is really the biggest bummer, but really not a huge deal. I just turn off notifications completely and look at the recordings every once in a while.

I assume it will still be functional with just the SD card and no sub like Wyze stuff is but I'm still researching…Might be better off spending the $40 for the Wyze feeder that comes with that special lens

I got a bird feeder cam as a gift for Christmas last year. No subscription but the novelty soon wears off. Constant notifications on my phone, the same type of birds over and over aren't that exciting to keep seeing, etc. At first it was fun, but after a while, it's not. Now, it's just a bird feeder.

Buy one that takes SD cards....like this one. Those require no monthly plans to review or post footage. Pretend problem solved Wink

BTW, "Most bird feeder cameras" also take SD cards. Getting those files onto a PC (then online) requires zero plan and is objectively not a "scam."

What doesn't cost: Live viewing, recording to SD card.
What does cost: Cloud storage, AI bird recognition (submit a snapshot to Google images for free instead.).

Just slow down and take some time to relax and enjoy life.

Spend your money on a decent camera, sit outside with a nice a cup of coffee, breathe in the fresh air, and wait for the birds to show up.
